FIFA has suspended Jarell Quansah for two matches, ruling that the England defender will miss both the World Cup quarter-final and semi-final if England progress that far.
Quansah was sent off in England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16 after a VAR review upgraded the incident to a straight red. The disciplinary panel was expected to hand down a one-match ban, but FIFA instead issued a longer suspension under article 14 of its disciplinary code.
The ruling means Quansah is unavailable for England’s next two knockout games. He can only return if Thomas Tuchel’s side reach the final.
The decision comes a few days after FIFA suspended the one-match ban handed to USA forward Folarin Balogun, a case that had already drawn criticism. Balogun was sent off in the round of 16 against Bosnia and Herzegovina and was due to miss the following round under the rules.
