Rodri has reportedly changed course and opened talks over a move to Barcelona, with Spanish reports saying he has informed Real Madrid that his decision is to join their rivals.
Guardiola’s role
According to Spanish journalist Mikel Blazquez, Pep Guardiola played a part in the U-turn. The former Barcelona coach, who spent seven years working with Rodri at Manchester City, is said to have called him this week to push the case for a switch to Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s pitch
Catalan newspaper Sport reported that Barcelona and Hansi Flick see Rodri as the experienced leader they need to compete for major trophies. Flick is said to have spoken directly to the Spain captain and outlined the club’s project, which has helped move the midfielder closer to a green light.
Barcelona also believe Rodri could fit alongside Marc Bernal without blocking his progress. With Frenkie de Jong sidelined by a long-term injury, the club view the need for another top-level midfielder as even more pressing.
