Marc Guehi has tipped Mexico as the stronger side ahead of England’s World Cup 2026 last-16 meeting in Mexico City, but says the Three Lions are prepared for the challenge.
England face Mexico at the historic Estadio Azteca on Monday in one of the round’s standout fixtures. Guehi pointed to the hosts’ home comfort, their clean sheet record in the tournament and the backing of a large crowd as reasons Mexico will be hard to beat.
He described playing at the Azteca as a real privilege and said England are keen to be part of a major occasion in a stadium associated with Pele and Diego Maradona.
Marcus Rashford took a different line, saying the altitude in Mexico City and the atmosphere will not decide the tie. He said the game comes down to winning football matches and stressed England’s need to stay united against a team carrying the support of a nation.
The winner will move into the World Cup quarter-finals after a tie shaped by both the quality on the pitch and the setting off it.
