Jordan Henderson’s World Cup is over after the England midfielder suffered a wrist injury in the celebrations following the win over Mexico.
The Brentford player fell after jumping over a barrier during the post-match scenes at the Azteca Stadium and landed badly on his hand. Team-mates and medical staff rushed to him before he was taken out on a stretcher and transferred to the nearest hospital for checks.
English media reported that Henderson will need surgery for a fractured wrist, ruling him out for the rest of the tournament. Thomas Tuchel, speaking in the mixed zone, confirmed the concern and said the injury looked serious.
Henderson, 36, had played only 51 minutes across two matches at the tournament. England had just secured a place in the quarter-finals after a difficult game against Mexico, in which Tuchel’s side spent almost the whole of the second half with 10 men.
