Klopp picks ter Stegen as Germany’s number one

ter Stegen gets the nod

Jürgen Klopp has chosen Marc-André ter Stegen as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming Nations League matches against Serbia and the Netherlands.

The decision settles the pecking order for the position, with Jonas Urbig and Alexander Nübel behind the Ajax loanee. Karim Adeyemi is among the absentees from the squad.

Why Klopp chose him

According to Sport, Klopp said ter Stegen is having an excellent season in Amsterdam and argued that goalkeepers need more than shot-stopping alone.

He said consistency, calmness and an ability to affect Germany's build-up all mattered, especially when the team plays with a high defensive line. Klopp also pointed to ter Stegen's experience when dealing with situations outside the penalty area and coming off his line to clear danger.

Ter Stegen missed the 2026 World Cup after a serious injury, but he is now back in regular club action and has a chance to establish himself again as Germany's main goalkeeper during this international break.
