Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands, according to English outlet Touchline, after the team’s World Cup exit on penalties to Morocco.
The Dutch drew 1-1 with Morocco over 120 minutes before losing the shootout 3-2 in the round of 16 on Tuesday morning, Tehran time. Koeman’s contract with the Dutch FA runs until the end of July, and he had already sounded unsure about whether the match was his last in charge.
After the game, the 63-year-old defended his decision to use five defenders. He said the system had been chosen with the players’ input and insisted he had no regrets.
Koeman took charge in December 2023. In his second spell as Netherlands boss, which followed a first stint from 2018 to 2020, he oversaw 45 games, with 25 wins, 11 draws and nine defeats.
The Netherlands had started their World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against Japan, then beat Sweden 5-1 and Tunisia 3-1 to finish top of Group F.
