Manchester City have identified Enzo Fernández as their main target to replace Rodri, according to reports in Italy.
Maresca wants his former midfielder
City manager Enzo Maresca is said to view Fernández as the best fit to lead and control his midfield. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Maresca believes the Chelsea midfielder has the tactical qualities needed to play as the pivot in his system.
Maresca worked closely with Fernández during his time at Chelsea and reportedly sees the Argentina international as a “dream” option to fill the gap at the Etihad.
Chelsea will make a sale difficult
Any move would be complicated. Chelsea still regard the 25-year-old as a key part of their long-term project and his contract runs until the summer of 2032.
That means the London club would demand a very large fee, especially with City viewed as a direct Premier League rival.
Rodri uncertainty increases City's need
City's search has intensified because Rodri's future is unclear. The Spain midfielder is into the final year of his contract and interest from major La Liga clubs has grown.
Real Madrid had long been seen as the likeliest destination, but Barcelona are now said to be leading the chase after progress in talks with the player's representatives.
