Enzo Maresca has downplayed the pressure around his first Manchester derby as Manchester City head to Old Trafford on Sunday, saying he has experienced more intense rivalries elsewhere in Europe.
Maresca’s view of the derby
Maresca said he understands what the fixture means to the club and its supporters, but stressed that City’s main task is to stay themselves and stick to the way they have played so far.
“Then we will see what the final result will be,” he said.
The City manager added that Old Trafford carries its own atmosphere, but the focus for his players should be on the game plan: how to win, how to press and how to improve.
Other derbies he has faced
Maresca pointed to several other high-profile rivalries from his career, saying Olympiacos against Panathinaikos was the fiercest. He also cited Juventus against Torino, Sevilla against Betis and matches he was involved in as a coach at Chelsea.
“I know Old Trafford has different conditions, but the main focus for the players must be on the game plan,” he said. “I like these kind of games.”
