Emiliano Martínez says Argentina will go into their World Cup semi-final against England with full confidence, describing the fixture as one of football’s classic rivalries.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper said both sides know the history attached to the match, but Argentina are not dwelling on it. Their aim, he said, is to reach the World Cup final again.
Martínez praised England’s squad and named Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka among the players that make them one of the strongest teams in the tournament. He added that Argentina believe in their own level and are not afraid of facing any opponent.
He also pointed to the pressure around the tie, saying Argentina’s players have experience in major matches and know how to handle it. Martínez said Lionel Scaloni’s team have improved through the tournament and are now two matches away from defending their title.
The goalkeeper thanked Argentina’s supporters as well, saying their backing has lifted the squad throughout the competition.
