Spain reached the World Cup quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Portugal in Dallas, ending Cristiano Ronaldo's tournament in the process.
The first half produced chances at both ends. Mikel Oyarzabal missed a one-on-one after a fine Dani Olmo pass in the eighth minute, while Ronaldo forced Unai Simón into a save four minutes later. Lamine Yamal and Olmo also tested Diogo Costa, and Nuno Mendes hit the post after the ball deflected off a Spain defender.
Portugal were steadier after the break and Spain had to wait until stoppage time for the breakthrough. In the 91st minute, Mikel Merino met Fran Torres's pass and guided the ball into the net.
Portugal's last chance came from Bernardo Silva, whose header drifted narrowly wide. Spain held on to stay in the competition without conceding.
