Neuer sets Bayern age record in Mainz win

Bayern Munich beat Mainz 2-1 in the ninth round of the Bundesliga, but Manuel Neuer’s age record and first-half injury drew most of the attention.

Neuer makes history

Neuer started in goal at 40 years and 225 days old, making him Bayern’s oldest player in Bundesliga history. He went off injured at half-time and was replaced by Jonas Urbig.

Bayern stay top

The result kept Bayern top of the Bundesliga under Vincent Kompany. Neuer’s appearance also put him in a small group of the league’s oldest players. According to Opta, only two goalkeepers have played in the Bundesliga at an older age: Uli Stein, at 42 years and 170 days, and Harald Schumacher, at 42 years and 73 days.
