Pirlo breaks silence over Italy job speculation

Andrea Pirlo has responded after days of debate over reports linking him with the Italy head coach job.

Pirlo addresses the row

In a statement on his official Instagram page, Pirlo said he had followed the discussion around his name and a possible return to the national team with “great discomfort”. He said he had stayed quiet out of respect for the institutions, the federation and everyone involved.

Pirlo also said that, throughout his playing and coaching career, he had always respected the laws of the countries where he worked and the contracts he signed. He thanked Paolo Maldini and Leonardo for the trust they showed in him and said he understood their experience and their “constant love” for Italian football.

Background to the speculation

The former midfielder has been linked as a leading candidate to replace the current set-up after Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for a third straight time. The reporting drew criticism because Pirlo works as a global ambassador for a Russian betting company, with some voices in Italy opposing his appointment and warning of possible legal action.

Pep Guardiola had previously been mentioned as a leading option, but he turned down the approach, leaving Pirlo among the main names in the frame.
