Graham Potter has told Sweden to treat their World Cup last-16 tie with France as a major test and an opportunity to show their level.
The Sweden coach said his team face one of the toughest assignments they could get, pointing to France’s strength across the pitch, their World Cup title pedigree and their experienced staff. But he added that respect does not mean fear, and insisted Sweden must go into the game with confidence.
Potter also praised the route Sweden have taken to the knockout stage, saying qualification was built on effort, belief and hard work after a disappointing qualifying campaign. He said the play-off showed the squad’s character and that they now need the same spirit again.
The coach admitted Sweden have a selection issue after the injury to Isak Hien, a key defender, and said his side must strike a balance between staying compact and attacking with purpose. He asked his players to be focused, brave and organised, while stressing that football is not decided on paper.
