Rodri has said choosing Barcelona over Real Madrid was one of the hardest calls of his career, but insists the decision was based purely on footballing reasons.
Barcelona project tipped the balance
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the Spain midfielder said Barcelona's plan for his role under sporting director Deco and coach Hansi Flick convinced him to join from Manchester City. Rodri said the project offered a better chance to develop and win trophies.
He added that the choice was not simple, with Real also pushing hard to sign him. Rodri said the Madrid club handled the process professionally and that Mourinho personally spoke to him about the role he could have in the team.
Ballon d'Or talk played no part
Rodri dismissed suggestions that the 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony influenced his decision. Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior did not attend the event when he collected the award, but Rodri said that had no effect on his thinking.
He said the night belonged to him and his family, and that he did not dwell on those who were absent. Rodri also said he later phoned Mourinho to thank him for his interest and respectful approach. Separately, he said reports about Enrique Riquelme's alleged presidential bid at Madrid did not distract him because his focus was on the World Cup and Spain.
