Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto to reach the World Cup round of 16, with Gonçalo Ramos heading home a winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Roberto Martínez’s side were the better team for long spells at BMO Field and went close early through Bruno Fernandes and Renato Veiga, while Croatia threatened mainly on the break. The breakthrough came just after the restart when Ivan Perišić finished a right-wing move from Josip Stanišić.
Portugal were level by the 68th minute after VAR awarded a penalty for a foul on Renato Veiga, and Ronaldo tucked it down the middle for his first knockout-stage goal at a World Cup in his sixth appearance. He had earlier seen a close-range finish ruled out for offside before being withdrawn in the 81st minute.
Croatia had two more goals disallowed for offside, including one in stoppage time, before Ramos settled the tie with a header from Rafael Leão’s cross. Portugal will face Spain in the next round on Monday, 15 July, at 10.30pm.
