Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni said his side is fully prepared for its 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Switzerland, expressing confidence in his players while stressing that no opponent at this stage of the tournament can be underestimated.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Scaloni suggested he is likely to stick with the same starting lineup used in Argentina's previous match, citing his satisfaction with the team's performance despite the intensity of the contest.
Reflecting on Argentina's recent evolution, Scaloni described the country's 2021 Copa América triumph as a defining turning point. He said the title gave the squad, particularly its experienced core, renewed confidence and peace of mind, laying the foundation for the team's subsequent success. He also highlighted recent tactical adjustments, including the introduction of Leandro Paredes, saying they have improved Argentina's ball circulation, possession, and ability to control play in the opposition half. According to Scaloni, the difficulties that marked the beginning of the training camp have now been replaced by a competitive and well-balanced team.
The Argentina coach also praised Switzerland, warning that there are no easy matches in the World Cup knockout rounds. He described the Swiss as an experienced, physically strong side with a proven record at major tournaments and said they deserve the utmost respect. Scaloni added that Switzerland's performances have surpassed those of teams such as Colombia during the competition.
Asked about the legacy he hopes this Argentina generation will leave behind, Scaloni said he wants the team to be remembered for its relentless ambition and refusal to settle. He said his players should approach every match with the same passion they had as children playing football, regardless of their previous achievements.
Scaloni also commented on the other side of the World Cup bracket, describing the clash between Spain and France as a "final before the final." While he believed Spain deserved its victory, he said France had once again demonstrated its quality. He added that Argentina's experience of winning the previous World Cup has helped the squad handle pressure far better than in the past.
A significant portion of the press conference focused on Lionel Messi. Scaloni said the captain remains in excellent physical condition and continues to make the difference whenever the opportunity arises. He praised Messi's commitment and competitive drive, insisting that as long as the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner remains motivated, he will continue to be the best player in the world. Scaloni also described the possibility that this could be Messi's final World Cup as an emotional and unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Assessing Argentina's overall form, Scaloni said the team continues to create chances and play attractive football despite a few minor issues. However, he acknowledged that replicating the level of performance displayed during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in every match is unrealistic, as every opponent raises its level against the defending champions.
Scaloni also dismissed long-standing claims that Argentina benefits from favorable refereeing decisions. He argued that with the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, it is virtually impossible for officials to favor one team over another and said many controversies are amplified by social media. Finally, while expressing pride in becoming Argentina's most successful World Cup coach in terms of victories, Scaloni insisted he is uncomfortable with comparisons to the country's legendary managers, emphasizing that continuing the team's progress is far more important than individual records.
