The emergence of young players was one of the standout features of the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Jamaran Sports – The 2026 FIFA World Cup has not been solely about experienced stars such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have continued to make an impact in the tournament. The new generation has also delivered impressive performances.
According to the BBC, among the 85 players aged 21 or younger competing in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, many have seized the opportunity and played fearlessly.
Senegal's Ibrahim Mbaye (18 years and 143 days) became the fourth-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history when he found the net for his team in a 3-1 defeat to France on June 16 in New Jersey.
Five days later, Lamine Yamal (18 years and 343 days) gave Spain the lead in a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.
Other young talents also emerged from the shadows.
Gilberto Mora, the teenage attacking midfielder for Mexico, had not even been born when Messi, Ronaldo, and Luka Modrić played in the 2006 World Cup.
Mora became the youngest player ever to represent a host nation at the World Cup (17 years and 240 days) when he came off the bench in Mexico's 2-0 opening-match victory over South Africa.
Yamal was already expected to be one of the tournament's key players.
But which other rising stars introduced themselves to the world during the group stage? Here are five young players who caught the eye.
Ayoub Bouaddi (Morocco, 18)
In his World Cup debut against Brazil on June 13, Ayoub Bouaddi became the second-youngest player this century to complete more than 50 passes (66) in a World Cup match. The Lille midfielder produced a superb display.
Former England captain Alan Shearer was highly impressed by his performance, saying: "Bouaddi looked at one with the ball and tried to control the midfield."
The teenage midfielder then became the first player aged 18 or younger since 1966 to complete more than 50 passes in two World Cup matches, recording 64 passes against Scotland.
Yann Diomande (Ivory Coast, 19)
Paris Saint-Germain are interested in Yann Diomande. Liverpool are as well.
It is easy to understand why after watching his dribbling ability at the World Cup.
The young RB Leipzig player created five chances in a 1-0 victory over Ecuador and also produced two key passes in a 2-1 defeat to Germany.
Thomas Frank, the former Tottenham and Brentford manager, told the BBC: "Diomande is the player everyone is talking about right now. Everything he does stays in my mind."
Ivory Coast had failed to advance beyond the group stage in each of its previous three World Cup appearances. Diomande has been one of the main reasons the team reached the knockout stage for the first time.
Johan Manzambi (Switzerland, 20)
Johan Manzambi was a goalkeeper during his youth career, with Germany's Manuel Neuer as his role model.
He is now a creative midfielder who enjoys driving forward and scoring goals.
Three of Switzerland's seven group-stage goals were scored by Manzambi. At the age of 20 years and 247 days, he became the youngest player in World Cup history to score two or more goals as a substitute, as well as the first Swiss player to achieve the feat.
The milestone came against Bosnia on June 18. When he entered the match in the 71st minute, the score was 0-0. He scored twice as Switzerland went on to win 4-1.
Manzambi also became one of only three players under the age of 21 this century to record four or more goal contributions (three goals and one assist) at a World Cup. The others were Kylian Mbappé in 2018 (four) and Thomas Müller in 2010 (eight).
Karim Alajbegović (Bosnia and Herzegovina, 18)
At 18 years and 276 days old, Karim Alajbegović became the youngest player since 1966 to score from outside the penalty area at a World Cup. He surpassed Kylian Mbappé, who achieved the feat at 19 years and 207 days against Croatia in 2018.
Alajbegović put Bosnia ahead against Qatar on June 24 with a spectacular long-range strike.
The young player, who spent last season with Salzburg, featured in all three group-stage matches and started two of them. With Bosnia advancing to the knockout stage, he could face hosts the United States on July 1.
In the 3-1 victory over Qatar, Alajbegović led all players with 17 duels contested, won the most duels (10), completed the most dribbles (6), drew the most fouls (4), and created the most chances (2).
Nestory Irankunda (Australia, 20)
Nestory Irankunda (20 years and 125 days) became Australia's youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer when he scored the opening goal in a 2-0 victory over Turkey.
He also became only the fourth Australian player, after John Aloisi, Tim Cahill, and Craig Goodwin, to score on his World Cup debut.
"It is unbelievable. It is a dream come true," Irankunda said.
The Australian forward was born in a refugee camp in Tanzania in 2006. His parents, originally from Burundi, fled their homeland because of the civil war.
Watford supporters already know all about Irankunda after he scored four goals for the club during the 2025–26 season. He joined Watford from Bayern Munich in 2025 in search of more first-team playing time.
