World Cup goal-scoring record broken!

The 2026 World Cup has set a new all-time scoring record after 60 matches, with the tournament reaching 177 goals. The milestone came during Turkey's game against the United States, when Barış Alper Yılmaz scored in the 31st minute to make it 2-0 and bring up the 173rd goal of the finals.

That meant the record fell before the group stage had even finished and before the knockout rounds had begun. Japan's 1-1 draw with Sweden added four more goals across the day's matches, leaving the total at 177 by the end of the 60th game.

Qatar 2022 had held the previous record with 172 goals, ahead of France 1998 and Brazil 2014, which both finished on 171. The 2026 tournament is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, up from 32 at the previous five finals.

The scoring rate has also been high. The tournament's average stands at 2.95 goals per game after 60 fixtures, above the average for each of the seven World Cups from 1998 to 2022. The all-time record for goals per game still belongs to Switzerland 1954, when 140 goals were scored across 26 matches for an average of 5.38.
