The feat had previously been achieved by West Germany in 1990 and by Italy in 1938 and 1982. Spain’s run under Luis de la Fuente was built on possession, a compact defence and steady game management.
The record underlines how controlled Spain’s campaign was on the way to lifting the trophy. They finished the tournament without ever being forced into a comeback.
