Argentina set an unwanted record in the World Cup final by finishing 90 minutes against Spain without a single shot. It was the first time such a thing had happened in a final since detailed records began in 1966.
Even with Lionel Messi on the pitch, Argentina could not turn its few attacks into chances. Spain controlled possession, pushed the game into Argentina's half and kept Unai Simón's goal untroubled throughout normal time.
The first half was even starker. Argentina became the first team on record to reach half-time in a World Cup final without a shot, while all three attempts before the break came from Spain in a first half that produced the fewest combined shots in a final since 1966.
The previous low mark had also belonged to Argentina, who managed just one shot in the 1990 final defeat by West Germany in Rome. This time, Lionel Scaloni's side improved late on in extra time, with a Simeone effort going over the bar, but Spain still won 1-0.
