Van Gaal offers to return as Netherlands coach

Louis van Gaal has told the Dutch federation he is available to return as Netherlands head coach, according to De Telegraaf.

Van Gaal available for fourth spell

If appointed, the 75-year-old would begin a fourth stint in charge of the Oranje. The report says Ronald Koeman is set to leave after the Netherlands’ poor showing at the 2026 World Cup.

Van Gaal has been out of coaching for several years after stepping away from the game. He revealed in 2022 that he had prostate cancer, and later said in an interview with De Telegraaf that his health issues had eased and no longer stood in the way of a return.

Rival candidates are tied up

The Dutch federation has not yet made formal contact with Van Gaal, but the balance of options appears to be shifting his way. Arne Slot has chosen to stay in club football, while Peter Bosz and Erik ten Hag are both under contract at their clubs.

Dutch media believe talks, if they begin, could move quickly. A deal would hand Van Gaal one of the more notable coaching comebacks in European football this year.
