Arteta sets a bigger target
Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal’s ambition is not limited to defending the Premier League title, with the manager saying the club wants to become the “best club in the world”. The comments came before Arsenal’s season opener against Coventry.
Arsenal won the league last season for the first time in 22 years and have added to the squad this summer, including Christos Zoulis and Bruno Guimarães, as they look to build on that success.
The Gunners also beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield, a result that has kept them among the leading teams heading into the new campaign.
Expectations are part of the job
Arteta welcomed the added pressure and said it comes with the role. He said the key is seeing “fire, motivation and the desire to improve” in his players every day.
Arsenal have not won back-to-back top-flight titles since the 1990s, and Arteta said the squad believes it can end that run. He pointed to the ambition, drive, ability and belief in the group as reasons for confidence.
