Michael Ballack says Germany have lost the qualities that once made them a major force, after their World Cup 2026 exit drew fresh criticism.
The former Mannschaft captain said Julian Nagelsmann’s side no longer cope well when games turn against them. Germany led for spells against Paraguay in the last 16, but were held to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes and then lost on penalties.
Ballack said Germany usually start well, with 10 to 20 strong minutes and sometimes an early goal, but fall apart as soon as they make a mistake or concede. “Then you ask yourself why?” he said.
He also placed much of the responsibility on the players, arguing they must take more control of events on the pitch. While he said the coach plays an important role in a team’s structure, he stressed that players have to manage many situations themselves during matches.
Germany’s early exit has prompted growing criticism of both the squad and the coaching staff, with calls for a serious rethink as the side tries to recover its old standing.
