Luis de la Fuente said Spain would have won by more if Emiliano Martínez had not produced a series of big saves in the final.
The 63-year-old spoke after Spain claimed their second World Cup and added the trophy to the European Championship and Nations League titles he has already won with the same generation. He said the squad had closed out a major stage and insisted the side has a bright future.
“We are world champions. I am happy and proud of the players,” he said. “We have completed a very important stage. We have been champions at all levels. This team has a very bright future. From now on, we are already thinking about what comes next.”
De la Fuente also said he was thinking of his parents and brother, adding that he was proud to be Spanish and would continue on the same path.
On the match itself, he said Spain played very well and that only Martínez’s saves stopped the scoreline becoming more one-sided.
