Google said search traffic reached an all-time high during Argentina’s World Cup match against Egypt.
Nick Fox, Google’s senior vice president for knowledge and information, said on his account that the search engine broke every previous record immediately after Argentina scored the winner. Google did not provide any exact numbers.
Google often surfaces football data, including live odds, team line-ups and match interpretation. That may have drawn users to check the late stages of the game as Argentina sealed the result.
Fox said he was pleased to see the global excitement around the World Cup and said he was looking ahead to the semi-finals and final.
The reason for the spike is unclear. One possibility is that users searched for live match details after the decisive goal; another is that some viewers in the United States turned to Google for help understanding the game and its flow.
