Merino: We have to show respect to Messi

Mikel Merino has said he and Lautaro Martínez may both begin the 2026 World Cup final on the bench, with Spain set to face Argentina in what he expects to be a fierce contest.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Arsenal midfielder said no player wants to start as a substitute, but stressed that squad strength matters at this level. He argued that those who do not start can still shape the game through training and by making an impact when introduced.

Merino said a World Cup final should feel tense and physical, with the referee responsible for managing the intensity. Spain, he said, will want the ball moving quickly and the tempo kept high to limit Argentina’s chances of committing fouls.

He also praised Lionel Messi, describing him as one of the greatest players in football history and paying tribute to his World Cup display at 39. Merino said facing the reigning champions adds motivation, and called the occasion “fantastic.”
