Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice against Austria to become Spain’s leading scorer in knockout matches, taking his tally to eight.
His first goal put Spain ahead after Marc Cucurella picked him out, and it ended a long wait for a knockout-stage strike in a World Cup for La Roja. Spain had not scored in the knockout rounds of a World Cup since Sergei Ignashevich’s own goal for Russia in the last 16 in 2018.
Oyarzabal added his second in the 90th minute from another Cucurella pass, controlling with his left foot and finishing from close range. He celebrated by placing the ball under his shirt and heading towards his family in the stands.
The brace also took him to 29 international goals, level with Fernando Hierro, and lifted his World Cup 2026 total to four. He is now one goal short of Spain’s all-time leading scorer at World Cups.
