Sturm Graz vs Marseille 1-0

Sturm Graz beat Marseille 1-0 in Graz after Oumar Diakité’s 13th-minute goal proved enough. Marseille had most of the ball and the bulk of the passing, but they could not turn that into an equaliser.

Diakité opened the scoring in the 13th minute from Luca Weinhandl’s assist, and Sturm Graz led 1-0. That remained the half-time score after Marseille had already picked up a booking for Angel Gomes on 24 minutes, while Diakité was booked for Sturm on 32 minutes.

Marseille made two changes at the break, with Angel Gomes replaced by Himad Abdelli and Neal Maupay by Igor Paixão, and Sturm also changed once as Diakité made way for Belmin Beganovic. Marseille made another double change on 65 minutes, sending on Pierre-Emile Højbjerg for Geoffrey Kondogbia and CJ Egan-Riley for Nayef Aguerd, but Sturm kept the lead. Late bookings for Amine Gouiri and Bamo Meite came after Arjan Malić and Luca Weinhandl had already gone into the book for Sturm, and Marseille could not find a leveller before the final whistle.

Marseille finished with 71% possession and 675 passes to Sturm Graz’s 29% and 274, but the home side had more shots on target, 5-1, and a higher xG at 1.47 to 0.62. Sturm also had 13 shots to Marseille’s 13, won 3-1 on offsides, and committed 23 fouls to 9.

There were three yellow cards for each side. Angel Gomes, Amine Gouiri and Bamo Meite were booked for Marseille, while Oumar Diakité, Luca Weinhandl and Arjan Malić went into the book for Sturm Graz.
